I Be Versatile!

We interrupt our regularly scheduled broadcast to bring you the following special announcement: (it makes up for one of the missed days during my after NaNoWriMo coma)

I’ve been nominated for the

Versatile Blogger Award!

Yahoo!

Tres cool!

Thanks to Limebird Writers for the lovely nomination and award.

(p.s. my favorite color is green and I love limes ๐Ÿ˜€ )

This is pretty cool and I had a definite “ah shucks” corny smile moment.

So…..ย  here’s what happens… (ie the rules… there has to be rules :-D)

1. Thank the award-giver and link back to them in your post. Yup! Got that one!

2. Share 7 things about yourself.ย ย  โ€“ Got that one too – it’s down below – read on, read on…

3. Pass this award along toย 15ย  recently discovered blogs you enjoy reading.ย  โ€“ This is the tricky part. I have 6 kids, a husband, a cat, books to write, a house to clean and I can hardly keep up with my friends blogs let alone discover new ones (how lame am I?). Not to mention that my most recent discovery of a cool blog was the one who gave me the award in the first place! Limebird Writers really is awesome. But, I promise to do my best – they may not be super recent discoveries though. Though I would have a fabulous blog to award if she would hurry up and get to writing it (hint, hint, Betsy, hint, hint :-p )

4. Contact your chosen bloggers to let them know about the award.

So, 7 things about me:

1. I am ashamed to admit I gave some of my really good friends the birdie – yup – horrible, I know – what??? no, of course not THAT birdie, what do you take me for? I have this little green bird fingerpuppet… (actually it’s my kids, but I found it in my pocket while talking with friends at our Christmas party and so I stuck it on my finger, (no not THAT finger) and … well lets just say we LAUGHED a LOT

2. I like to sing show tunes in my kitchen and dance while cooking/cleaning

3. I tell myself stories in my head to put myself to sleep at night – which is why there’s a notebook at the side of my bed, because often it is the story I am currently working on and my characters clue me in on important events right as I’m nodding off. Rather rude of them, really, but I suppose it’s the only time they get me to themselves – ha ha

4. I am married to the man of my dreams and have six amazing kids who are no where near angelic, but that’s okay, I love them that way and it makes for better stories and blog posts.

5. I like to smell books.ย  No really… (and other crazy schemes too)

6. I used to be able to stick my feet behind my head ( until my sister told me they’d get stuck that way) I can’t do it anymore – I just tried – but I can at least touch my heals to the top back portion of my head.

7. I am only 99/100 of a whole person. The other 1/100 was eaten by my dog – or just became fertilizer. I curse lawnmowers.

Okay – now that you’ve suffered through that bit – here are a few of the blogs I enjoy reading. I tried to choose some of the newer ones, but a few oldies but goodies snuck in there anyway… (in no particular order – of course – I’m not going to play favorites, guys)

1. The Ear Wax Tastes Likes Crayons blog (the title says it all, really)

2. Nostalgic Nana

3. Zoo Keeping

4. The Other Foote

5. ANWA Blog (American Night Writers Association)

6. Keeping up with the Joneses

7. This Little Miggy Stayed Home

8. Simply, Me

9. Feather Sky

10. April’s World

(erm, I at least made it to 10. How about, I dedicate myself to finding 5 new blogs I enjoy?ย  I think I’ll peruse Limebird Writers’ list – it look very fun ๐Ÿ˜€ Besides, 15 is an awful lot…)

My Journey in Writing

Yesterday marked my

six year

anniversary of blogging. I had no idea it had been such a long time!

It also marked the anniversary of my return to

writing.

I have always loved to write.

In an old worn out binder I have a collection of poems I wrote at the age of 7. Apparantly at that age I was fascinated withย  repetition. The poem that sat on the fridge the longest – or somewhere anyway – went like this:

I had a little pony that could hop hop hop

I had a little pony that could run run run

I had a pony that could walk walk walk

And on the way I said Stop, Stop, Stop!

Not exactly a masterpiece – but the writing bug bit.

Around the time I turned 11,ย  my mom and I were bashing about Oregonย  and I wrote a lengthy poem about my stuffed animals Randy Raccoon and Olivia Octopus (I think it was Olivia Octupus anyway – or was it Ollie?) and all the adventures they had. But that seems to have lost itself over the years.

In middle school I wound up with the most amazing teacher ever for Language Arts, Ms. Mac. She was hard, but she was awesome. She was the first one, besides my parents of course, who pushed and encouraged me in writing.

One creative writing assignment after another flew at me and I gobbled them up. At the time I fancied myself a bit of an artist and so illustrated most of my stories. I still have copies of them. They make me chuckle now and my kids will get a kick out of them.

Dad let me type a number of them up on the old typwriter. I felt SO important being able to use a typewriter for my stories.ย  Of course, when Dad didn’t need the computer, I used that too. At the time, though, I liked the click click click of the typwriter – and it made me feel very “Jessica Fletcher” esque (Murder She Wrote was one of my Grandma’s and Mom’s favorite shows).

In highschool I wrote more poetry than I did stories, though I wrote a few here and there. Usually I was too consumed with the next research paper and reading book after book after book.

My guilty pleasure of college was a creative writing class and I still remember the shocked feeling when my teacher thought my writing was good.

After college came a mission and family and writing sort of slipped away.

Until six years ago when a group of Ricks College friends co-erced me into blogging.ย  It was SO fun. We all blogged pretty much every day then, and I met a number of new amazing friends too – some I’ve met in person and some I have yet to meet.

The more I wrote, the more I remembered my love of it. I started with poems – they were short and easy to accomplish. A book sounded so daunting. I had never written anything longer than a short children’s story.

But, everywhere I went in the writing community I kept hearing about NaNoWriMo. What was that?? I found out it stood for National Novel Writing Month. 50k words in a month sounded like A LOT, but in 2007 I decided to try it. Who knew, maybe I’d find out I could write a book like I wanted to after all.

Well, I wrote a book, and two more since then. They’re not published, but I’m querying. My rejection pile is stacking up nicely. Most of the time I don’t care about the rejections- it’s the writing I love, being published would be a fun added bonus. Ok, it would be downright amazing, but I never started writing to be published. In fact, I never thought it possible and had no intention of even trying until some friends convinced me otherwise. It’s been a great learning experience along the way.

So, NaNoWriMo is here again and I’m writing another book. I’m editing my old book too though, so I don’t know if I’ll make the 50K this time around.

I have to give a huge

thank you

to my parents, teachers and friends through the years who kept me going and got me started again. And most of all to my husband for his never ending support and being my biggest cheerleader and fan. You guys are all awesome.

Now,

I have a book to write!

10 Reasons I Blog

I was tagged by Amanda, so, here goes.

1. I like to write.

2. I first wrote to get down all the crazy and fun stories – and others too, of my life. Some of my best posts are way back in my archives, as I am running out of childhood stories and the like.

3. It is a great way to keep in touch with, and even make new, friends.

4. It is kind of like a journal for me – it helps me remember all the funny things the kids do, and motivates me to get stories from long ago written down.

5. It is a great way to raise awareness of heart defects.

6. It is also a great way to connect with and support other heart families – I have met some amazing people this way.

7. I love reading all of my friends stories and I learn so much from them.

8. I am a bit of a klutz, ahem, and I figure it is all worth it if I can make some one laugh – so I tell all my silly stories in order to hopefully brighten someone’s day.

9. I like to take pictures and it has encouraged me (because I have blog friends who take INCREDIBLE photos) to take betters photographs and maybe someday take a class.

10. Writing is cathartic. I think things through better when I write about them.

Aww Shucks Folks

Two of my sweet friends, Deb and Nancy,ย have awarded me with this:

ย Thinking Blogger Award

Now, when you are chosen for this great and noble honor, you are supposed to choose five blogs that you think deserve this award and bestow it lovingly upon them. Not just any five blogs however, five blogs that make you think – which brings up the question how I managed to get this award ๐Ÿ™‚ Thanks much you two ๐Ÿ™‚

Anyway here are the official rules:
1. If, and only if, you get tagged, write a post with links to 5 blogs that make you think,
2. Link to this post so that people can easily find the exact origin of the meme,
3. Optional: Proudly display the ‘Thinking Blogger Award’ with a link to the post that you wrote (here is an alternative silver version if gold doesn’t fit your blog).

*Now here is my disclaimer: I love all my blogging friends, and if I don’t tag you, don’t hate me, I do only get to choose five after all – and no fighting or squabbling over the shiny award – it might get tarnished – heh ๐Ÿ™‚

Here they are (in no particular order)

1. Karen
2. Sariah
3. Proud Mum – or Zen Mama now
4. April
And the fifth and fianl award goes to:
5. Fourth Fret – I know she is not blogging anymore and has erased all of her posts but one, but I must say that hers was a blog that I looked forward to reading everyday, and along with the others listed here, it truly did make me think. I miss her terribly, and I hope some day Fourth Fret reenters the blog world. So in memory of an incredible blog and blogger I give my final award.

As for the others I listed, I figured I could say why I chose them for the thinking blogger award, but then where is the fun in that? It would rob you of the joy of reading their blogs to see why I think they are so great, so go read, and be sure to say hi when you do. ๐Ÿ™‚

Bring Back My Lap-top To Me…

My lap-top’s somewhere in Wisconnsin,
Or maybe it’s in Tennesee,
Whereever it is, I do need it,
Oh, bring back my lap-top to me.

(Everyone now)

Bring back, bring back
Oh, bring back my lap-top to me, to me!
Bring back, bring back,
Oh, bring back my lap-top to me.

I really need my lap-top back. I’m dead in the water without it. It is next to impossible to get any writing done. If I step in to HHH’s office to use the computer then Jacob wrecks havoc in his office. If I close the door then… well, can you imagine closing the door and letting an almost 2 year old have free reign of the house? Exactly, I want to have my house still standing when I am done blogging. Paul is back in school, so when he is home in the evening and the kids are in bed, he is working on the computer (some crazy idea about getting his homework done, can you believe it? Sheesh! heh ). ๐Ÿ™‚ The only other time I have is during quiet time when the older kids are at school.

Really the perfect time for writing is then, but then its also the perfect time for folding laundry, cleaning the bathroom, mopping the floor, cleaning my office (hah!),… you get the idea. So, we bow our heads and morn the temporary loss of my lap-top and hope that it gets fixed and sent back… FAST. ๐Ÿ™‚ So, if you have noticed my lack of writing, it’s not exactly that I am dealing with writer’s block. More like kid and inconvenience block. heh. ๐Ÿ™‚

So, I would love to write more, and work on that story for Karen’s writing games, but I really need to go clean the bathroom before Jacob gets up. Ta-ta for now!

Just too funny for words…

My Peculiar Aristocratic Title is:
Venerable Lady Julia the Bovine of Melbury Bubblewick
Get your Peculiar Aristocratic Title

It was just too funny, really, considering my “cow history“. So, I just had to bring back my ol’ friend, the cow, from my beginning blogger days.

A New Page

I added a new page today titled “Books” (the button for it is up above my profile along with “Home” and “About”). I thought it would be fun to keep track of the books I read and see just how many I usually go through in a year. If you have a book that you absolutely love and think I would love feel free to go on in and recommend it to me. If you want to see what I’m reading and what I think of it you can take a look at that too. I won’t have a long dissertation on each book, just a general yay or nay. If you have a question about a certain book, feel free to ask.

Come On In…

… and have a seat! Welcome to my new home. After a lot of contemplation I decided to go through with the change that I have been thinking about for months. I think Karen’s decision to make the switch inspired me to action.

The template will still go through some changes, but I think I’m pretty well settled for now. I categorized all posts, so all the old stuff is here, and easy to find (hopefully).

Anyway, drop me a comment and let me know you found me! ๐Ÿ™‚
