Fall Fun!

Saturday took us on our traditional fall fun day full of wagon rides, corn and hay mazes, pumpkin pickin’, and more! Feast your eyes on our crazy collages! It was an amazing day!

We started off checking to see how tall we were this fall…

And then we had to check out the goat and the alpaca

Raking Up Leaves is Fun to Do…

For now anyway, I am sure the excitement will wear off soon, cause they’ve just barely begun to fall. Luckily Paul has a leaf blower which helps out – A LOT. Murdoch seems quite intrigued by the leaf blow too – he tries to fight the air to “bite” the nozzel – pretty hilarious to see his gums flapping in the breeze.

So, today, while I took a nice little walk with Robert and James, everyone else got started on the leaves. My walk was wonderful, by the way, I was even joined by a neighbor and it was awesome to get to know her better. I am loving out neighborhood and the people in it! Anyway, back to the leaves… When we got back the leaf raking party was in full swing and James was all to excited to help out.

Oh, and I think James had just as much fun with the leaf blower as Murdoch did…

And of course in the midst of all that hard work there was plenty of play!

Leaf Jumping 2010 1

Oh, and each kid as they flew through the air to jump in the leaf pile was shouting “WAHOO!” So, you have shout it in your mind – or even better out loud – as you look at each picture in the collage – it will complete the visual experience. Seriously. Do it. NOW. 😀

I love Autumn! I love the trees and the leaf piles. I love the giggly kids as they fly through the air to jump in the leaf piles. I love pumpkins and apples and cider. I love the crispness to the air and crunch of leaves underfoot. And to think, we’re just getting started – there’s lots more Autumn to come. Yay!!

Fall (the season, silly – what were you thinking?)

Autumn

Trees don their burnt orange frocks
Before midnight winter   stealthily   steels   in.
Leaves dance
                      dizz-
                    ily
                      down-
                    ward;
A crisp crinkly crunch                 my feet.
                                  beneath

Apples polished to a shiny rosy red.
Enameled teeth
        sink
into white flesh
With an audible cool crunch and juice,
Dribbling
delectably,
descends
my chin.

Pointy
pencils scrape paper;
Inhale the scent of wooded lead
And the dusky pulpy
Pages of books barely opened.

The wind, now bold and brisk,
Bites my cheeks and teases my hair
Into a frenzied flurry of chaos, chasing clouds across the sky.

-J.H. Schmidt

I love fall. I love the smell of freshly sharpened pencils and wet earth as the rain sets in. I love the grins on kids faces as they return to school, and the feeling of slightly more time to get things done.

Back to School-002

I love the sound of laughter as leaves are raked and piles jumped into. I love pumpkins bright and orange and bouncing behind the tractor on a hay ride. I love the cheering and flushed faces as the kids kick the soccer ball down the field.

This time of year is SO much fun! I can’t wait to go to the pumpkin patch with the kids and rake the leaves. I feel positively giddy! 😀

Halloween Fun

It wasn’t until the night before Halloween that we finally had a chance to roll up our sleeves and get to work on our pumpkins.

 Halloween Collage1

James wasn’t too sure about the gooey stuff inside, and the poor kid was so tired at the end he could barely open his eyes for his ‘finished product’ photo.

Halloween Collage2

And of course everyone had to model their pumpkins – they did the designs completely by themselves, however Paul and I did the cutting…

Halloween Collage3

We had a blast on Friday, and unlike past years, I did not make their costumes. I had it all planned what I was going to make, but Paul kept feeling like I had too much going on and shouldn’t do them this year. He convinced me and we got their costumes from garage sales and Goodwill. It was a good thing too because between James’ surgery and all the sickies, I never would have gotten them done. So here’s to simplifying! Hopefully next year I can make them again (because it is way fun 🙂 )

Anyway, I always said I live in a zoo and here they are (I took the photo AFTER we were done for the night- big mistake they were all exhausted):

Our Saturdays in Pictures

Our Saturdays these last few weeks have been packed.  On September 19th we had our Stake Day of Service. Our ward joined our community, who also has a day of service the same day, and worked on different projects around town.  We helped out, with other ward members, at a group home. Scraping paint, raking, rearranging things, painting fences and the house, fixing the deck, and a bunch of other things.  All the kids pitched right in, and we had a blast working together as a family.

Stake Day of Service

The next Saturday Elizabeth had her boot off and was able to play in her first soccer game. The first week of October was General Conference, which we thoroughly enjoyed, Jacob and Em gave up soccer that day, though Elizabeth and Dorothy were lucky enough to only miss 10 minutes of their game. Then, the following week I was gone and missed these adorbale photos of James playing with Jacob’s favorite truck (I was amazed that Jacob even let him!). This last Saturday was Jacob’s last day of Little Big Kicks – he is #13.

Saturdays

“Hey, Hey, We’re the Monkeys!” After Jacob’s Little Big Kick’s and Emily’s soccer game in the morning, the girls and I had a bit of fun on our way back to the car.

The Monkeys

Elizabeth and Dorothy had their soccer game at 1:10 in the afternoon. Once they finished we piled in the car and took off to Heiser Farms for a fun filled afternoon of hay mazes, corn mazes, pumpkin lifting contest (between our kids), hay rides, and tractor riding/playing. It was a hoot.

Heiser Farms

A couple weeks back we made our annual trip to the pumpkin patch.  We love Heiser farms because they don’t charge for most of their activities – and the ones they do charge for are really inexpensive.  There are animals, a giant slide, a hay tunnel, mini and large tractors to ride and sit on, a hay maze, a corn maze, pumpkins galore, and you can even sit in the hayloft and watch the Peanuts Halloween cartoon.

We started off at the photo board cut-outs…

Ma and Pa Kettle:

Emily looking oh so adorable:

Hey Dad, I know you’re in there!

As soon as Jacob spotted the little tractors he was gone like a streak of lightning…

Little Tractor Boy

Once the big tractors were spotted the little ones were forgotten…

I know this lever here has to do something…

Jacob and Tractor

Elizabeth is on a mission – she just doesn’t realize that someone else is on a mission to usurp the tractor back into his power. Mua ha ha ha ha ha!

Liz and Tractor

If I just had longer legs I could reach the pedals down there….

Em and Tractor

WHOA!

Dot and Tractor

We headed to the hayride after that which takes us to the pumpkin patch and the corn maze. We don’t actually buy our pumpkins there, but we do have a contest to see what is the biggest pumpkin each kid can pick up.

Go Emmy, Go!

Heave Dot, Heave!

I think I saw it lift a millimeter off the ground Liz.

I can, I can!

Well maybe not, I’ll just kiss it instead.

It's too heavy - I'll just kiss it instead

After we terrorized the pumpkins in the patch we headed into the corn maze…

Headed into the Corn Maze

Hey, where’d everyone go? This isn’t Signs is it?

Corn Maze

Eeeek!!! Aliens! So, that’s where all the crop circles come from.

Paul and kids in Corn maze

And that wraps up our trip to the pumpkin patch. Tomorrow’s installment will be the carving of the pumpkins. If you are wishing to see more pictures, (who can resist looking at more pics of these adorable kids) I have more posted on flickr. If you can’t see them it is because you need an invite, so let me know and I shall invite you.

Carving Pumpkins and Stuffing Scarecrows

Last year we started a new halloween/autumn tradition. While at Heiser Farms we picked up some haybales and the corn stalks. Then, a day or two later we sat out on our front step and stuffed our friendly scarecrow. Everyone pitched in and Jacob watched from his play area. Here we have the crew hanging on the front step surrounded by our fall festivities.

Pumpkin carving time! One of our favorite activities. Everyone loves to take the ‘guts’ out of the punpkins and for Jacob it was a new and interesting experience. You can tell by the grin on his face, he thought it was lots of fun. 🙂

I love how the seeds and goop are just dripping out of Emily’s hands all the way down to the pumpkin.

Here is everyone, digging and scraping away.

I know it’s mean of me not to post photos of the finished products, I didn’t do it on purpose, they are just in my camera still with the rest of the halloween photos. They will be coming soon (after Thanksgiving some time).
