Making a Chess Set – Super Heroes Vs. Villains

My first sell on Etsy was a Super Heroes Vs. Villains chess set, so I decided to take some pictures of the process. If you decide you are interested in ordering one or taking a look at the other sets I have made (Star Wars, Harry Potter, & Lord of the Rings) click on the link: WoodnPlaytime

If you want a chess set and have an idea for something I haven’t made – contact me and we’ll see what we can come up with!

I order the plain peg people as a set and start with base coats. As the base coats dry I add in details as you can see. The bigger pieces are 3 9/16 inches tall where the pawns are only 1 1/8 inches tall. The Super Heroes Vs Villains is one of the hardest sets I paint because each piece is different and there are a lot of details to get on even the smallest pieces. Each piece is painted on the bottom – Heroes I did yellow and Villains I did red – & labeled with it’s name.

Once all the pieces are done I start to work on the board. My awesome hubby cuts the board down to size for me and after it’s sanded I varnish it. Once the varnish is dry I measure and grid the board with a pencil. In the past I have just hand painted, trying my best to do clean straight lines – this time I got smart and taped the board off. I love how it turned out. I still had to hand paint some of the edge lines though.

Once the board is done I sew a couple bags to hold the pieces. I like finding fabric that fits the chess set theme when possible – I was thrilled to find these two contrasting patterns.  I put the villains in the gray bag and the heroes in the blue – but the customer can bag them however they like.

This particular set is about to be shipped off – my first Etsy store order! Woohoo! But it is listed in my store – it takes 3-5 weeks to get these painted because of the detail, etc, so think ahead if your interested! My other small sets take 2-4 weeks and the big 4 player Harry potter set takes 4-6 weeks.

Look at me, getting crafty!

It can happen, you know!

I really do like to make things – call me a closet crafter, lol.

Often I just don’t have much time between kids and writing and life,

but this year things are a little tight and we had some unexpected expenses in the last week

the kind that make you think….

“Hmmmm… I have a bunch of crafty stuff laying around, I wonder if I could make Christmas?”

So, I got started, and I’m having a blast.

One of the ideas I saw & loved was to make peg dolls – pinterest is covered with them. But, the tricky part for me was that I didn’t have any peg dolls on hand & going out and buying them would defeat the whole “let’s save money” mindset.

So, I dug out my box of wood crafts. I don’t even know where I got most of them – I think someone handed them to me at one point and I said “cool! thinking they’d come in handy someday for kid crafts or who knows what.”

In my box I found a bunch of wood balls and beads in varying sizes & a bunch of wood candle cups in varying sizes. After playing around with things for a while. I flipped the candle cups upside down and set beads or balls on top (depending on the size.

Voila!!

I had peg people!!

I was immensely excited and began hot gluing away – the plan being to make 5 sets of 5 (1 for each kid). The only downside to this whole process was the few layers of skin I took of my finger with hot glue – OUCH!!!

Anyway, not only do I have nifty peg people, but mine are even cooler because you can stick your fingers in them and use them like little wooden finger puppets too! Gotta love those upside down candle cups.

I spent the morning painting the first group – I’m not the most amazing artist, but I really had a lot of fun 😀

So, here is my first set – this is a Super Hero set which will go to Jamesy (don’t tell!!!)

Super Hero Peg People

Here are the other 4 sets to look forward to:

Star Wars (Jacob)

Sesame Street (Robert – these will all be done bigger – Incredible Hulk size)

Harry Potter (Em)

Wizard of Oz (Dot)

Wish me luck! We’ll see how they go 😀

About James

The classic James face – thumb(s) of approval and either a “yeah mom” nod or a very cheesy smile. 🙂

Dad was lying across the bed, his chin resting on my body pillow, while he watched James play with cars on my nightstand. A milky white plastic ice cream bucket laid on its side on the edge of the bed, evidence of James’ recent bout with the tummy bug. I sat beside it, one leg tucked under me, the other dangling down to the floor while I fed Robert.

“Vrooom.” James scooted a car across my nightstand, onto the bed and into the bucket.

Paul reached out, snagged the lip of the bucket and flipped the opening toward him, secretly depositing the car behind the body pillow before returning the bucket to its original position.

James giggled and grabbed another car. Once again it vroomed across the nightstand, onto the bed and into the bucket. Paul gave the speedy flip, this time tipping his head back to dodge the flying car. He laughed and put the bucket back as James grinned and grabbed another car.

They went through about five or six cars, James giggling all the while. Pretty soon James was out of cars.

“What now?” Paul asked.

James didn’t say a word. He simply rolled himself onto the bed by the bucket, trying to fit his shoulder or any part of him inside it, a silly grin plastered on his face.

I almost dropped the baby I was laughing so hard.

Speaking of James… He had a birthday recently… well, okay, it’s been an entire month, but with a birthday so soon after Christmas I am still caught up in the fun, tumult and chaos of winter vacations and Christmas recovery. He’s 3! And such a cute sweet three at that. 🙂 His birthday snuck up on me as it usually does and I found myself on that wonderful Monday trying to decide what exactly we were going to do for a party. James has had a thing for super heroes lately. He sings the the Superman and Spiderman (the Amazing Spiderman cartoons) songs. If any of his clothes with the super man logo or spiderman are on them he HAS to wear them. We frequently find he and his brother dressed up in spiderman or batman costumes racing around the house and being absolutely cute and adorable. So, what else could I do than a superhero party?

First thing we needed was a telephone booth – I built one from cardboard boxes – and some super heroes…

James Birthday 1

Then we needed a super villain – Dad filled the part nicely. In fact, he was so villainous that he bombed our basement! Luckily I had 5 superheroes on hand (and an adorable baby observing) to disarm all the bombs before the basement blew up.

James Birthday 2

Our heroes only thwarted the villain momentarily though, because before long he was back… and this time with kryptonite! Luckily I had a pair of tongues handy and a lead lined boxed for kryptonite disposal.

James Birthday 3

Our main mini-hero almost bought it, though in the end he was victorious!

Finally the heroes discovered the villain’s only weakness – toilet paper! They got out their webslinger and froze him just long enough to push him in a chair and wrap him up with toilet paper. He was totally defenseless (and the silly string smelled really bad).

James Birthday 4

Take that super-villain! Bring it on!

And any party wouldn’t be complete with out the cake and funny birthday faces…

James Birthday 5

We sure love our silly, hammy, smiley boy! 😀
